Help Big Park students raise money for the educational and inspiring trip of a lifetime, while at the same time, getting the great deals you can only find at your local yard sale.

On November 7th Big Park middle school students will host a grand yard and bake sale at Big Park Community School from 10am-2pm. All proceeds will go towards helping the students reach their destination: a five-day trip to Washington , DC and the surrounding historical cultural sites. Local families have donated items and there will be tasty holiday treats abound.

Get something new and make a kid’s dream come true!

November 19 – Opening Night – There will be a Sedona Chamber of Commerce Volunteer Open House at Los Abrigados Resort & Spa, plus the Sedona Tweet-Up!! All Volunteers and Tweeters will be urged to take a tour of the lights. Santa, or an elf, will be flown in by Guardian Air helicopter at approximately 5 p.m.

The City of Sedona Parks and Recreation Department is looking for people interested in volunteering their time a few nights a week and Saturday mornings to coach a youth basketball team. We will have three divisions of play. The first division will be made up of children in the 1st and 2nd grades. The second division will be made up of children in the 3rd and 4th grades. The third division will be made up of children in the 5th through 7th grades. Objectives of the program are to develop fair play and sportsmanship, develop skills in basketball and to have fun! As a continuing initiative to encourage northern Arizona to get healthy, the 4th Annual FREE Off The Couch Program is off and running Fall 2009 at Goldenstein Gallery – preparing for the Sedona Cinco de Marathon Feb. 6, 2010. For the 4th year in a row the inspiring free seminar series is going to be led by world renowned Olympic trainer Phil Wharton of Wharton Performance who has also just been named to the Dr. Oz top 100 Health Experts. Look for Phil and his father Jim on upcoming segments of Dr. Oz’s new national TV talk show introduced by Oprah.

“Our aim is to change how people see themselves,” says Wharton “It is so easy to get overwhelmed if you have gotten out of shape or gained weight. The program encourages small shifts and steps that add up to a healthier lifestyle. Small modifications and adjustments can change your life over time. This is about your whole life and not just a quick fix.”

Challenged by this tough economy, I urge parents to let us help you by feeding your children breakfast every morning. Are you aware that if your child qualifies for free or reduced lunches that they are also qualified for free or reduced breakfast.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. By eating breakfast you start your day off right by fueling your brain and sustaining your energy level throughout the day. Not only is breakfast a great way to start your day but your child, if qualified, can eat for free or for just $.30. That is $1.50 a week. A full paid breakfast is only $1.50.

Parents I implore you to let us help you; make the effort and bring your kids in by 8:00 a.m and we promise to feed them a hot meal so they can begin their day out the right way.

As the weather cools off, Parks and Recreation heats up. Look at what November has to offer.

Basic Dog Obedience- Two Sessions Available: Wednesdays, November 11 – December 16, 2009 from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Saturdays, November 14 – December 19, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Each Class is $75 per dog for six weeks. Minimum age of participant is 9 years old with and an adult. Minimum age of dog is 4 months with current vaccinations. Class size: minimum of 4 participants, maximum of 15 participants. All dogs must be healthy, vaccinated and on a leash at all times. Required equipment: 5-6 foot leash, 30 foot lead, large link training collar properly sized, regular collar.

Lunchtime Language- Spanish, 45 minute class during your lunch break. October 28-December 2. 12:15 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. $50 per person, must be 14 years or older. Class held in the recreation room at Posse Grounds Park.

Osteo-Fitness- Fracture Prevention Exercises for Osteoporosis focus on sight-specific areas affected by Osteoporosis. Mondays and Wednesdays, November 2 – November 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Fee is $56 per participant. Fitness for Older Adults with Special Conditions- Low impact exercises and resistance band training. Excellent for Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, High Blood pressure, MS, COPD, Post-Polio Syndrome, and other conditions that keep you from exercising. Mondays and Wednesdays, November 2 – November 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Fee is $56 per participant.

Tennis- Ongoing tennis instruction for men, women and children of all ages. For a complete list of days and time depending on skill level please reference our website.

Grasshopper Basketball League- The City of Sedona Parks and Recreation is proud to announce another great season of Grasshopper Basketball for 1st through 7th graders! Whether you are a coach or a player, we offer a fun and exciting season for all who participate in this league. This is a low-pressure league with an emphasis placed on teaching children the rules and fundamentals of basketball. Each child will receive their own jersey with their team name on the front that they will keep at the end of the season. We need volunteer coaches! $35.00 registration fee. $32 for second sibling. $40.00 late registration fee (after November 21). All practices and clinics will be held in the Gymnasium at West Sedona School.   Basketball Clinics- Please have your child attend so they may be properly placed on a team. Clinic for grades 1-4, November 7, 2009 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Clinic for grades 5-7, November 14, 2009 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Basketball Practices will begin December 8, 9, and 10. Grades 1-2 practice Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Grades 3-4 practice Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Grades 5-7 practice Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Opening game day is January 9, 2010. The league will end on March 13, 2010.

Dribble, Dish & Swish- This event is FREE. The NBA FIT / WNBA FIT Dribble, Dish & Swish, Presented by Pepperidge Farm® Flavor Blasted® Goldfish® crackers provides boys and girls, between the ages of 7-12, the opportunity to showcase their basketball skills in a time-based national competition against their peers. Boys and girls in three separate age divisions (7-8, 9-10, and 11-12) compete against each other in a basketball skills course that challenges participants to dribble, pass and shoot accurately as quickly as possible. Saturday, November 21, 2009 Registration begins at 12:00 p.m. and competition begins at 1:00 p.m. Outdoor Basketball Court at Posse Grounds Park All participants must bring a copy of their birth certificate and wear sneakers for the competition.

Water Aerobics- Morning classes are offered Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Villas of Sedona indoor pool (55 Northview Road). $5 drop-in fee for classes. Community Pool- The pool has closed for the season. We hope to see you all again in May 2010.

Sedona Oak Creek School District has been a designated community beneficiary for the Sedona Marathon Event since its inception.  But in order to make fund-raising more personal, the Sedona Marathon Event and the SOCSD administration has determined that individual special interest groups, teams, clubs etc, of the SOCSD schools can take on the fund-raising challenge individually for their own organization benefit rather than the overall.  That means that whether it is the Booster Club, PTSA, FBLA, ALPS, Swim Team, Spanish Club, Site Council, whatever, the free entries that were formerly under the SOCSD can now be applied directly to an interested school organization for fundraising. All monies raised by racers of the organization, whether walking or running now apply directly to their organization of choice.  Checks would be made out directly to the organization of choice.

There are a limited number of free entries designated this way, so first come, first served.  It is recommended that an organization set a goal and a minimum amount for each participant who receives a free entry, for example $250 for an adult, or $50 for a child.  Then the organization can register as an official fund-raising entity within the schools by sending an email outlining the goals and minimums for their racers to info@sedonamarathon.com.  The complementary (free) race entry form to be used by these participants will be posted for retrieval on the SOCSD website or available from the Sedona Marathon Event, info@sedonamarathon.com.  Entrants can do any of the Sedona Marathon Events: 5K. ½ marathon or full marathon.

Once the free entry spots are used up, fund raisers may still raise funds and register at the military discount for the Sedona Marathon Event, with notations made as to their organization they are raising the finds for on the entry in order to qualify for this discount.

The other major charities named as beneficiaries of the Sedona Marathon event have each raised in the 5 figure $$ range for their minimal efforts – so you may be surprised at what you can accomplish.  We encourage the individual organizations within the Sedona Oak Creek School District to take advantage of this opportunity.  The other charities have maximized their involvement in the Sedona Marathon Event and we hope that the individual school organizations can also benefit as well.
