Note From the Nurse – Swine Flu

August 8, 2009

Dear Parents/Guardians of Sedona Oak Creek School District:

Recently, the Arizona State Department of Health released information  regarding the recent outbreak of Swine Flu in several foreign countries and in many states here in the US.  We want to share the following information with you from the Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

What is Swine Flu? Influenza A Virus. This virus causes illness in both humans and many animals. Some Influenza A are adapted to pigs and cause respiratory illness in them, and so have been called “Swine Flu”.  The Swine Influenza Virus now being investigated is different from the virus causing illness in pigs and is not being transmitted from pigs to humans. This new “Swine Flu” appears to be transmitted person to person.

Symptoms: Symptoms for this new type of Swine Flu are similar to the symptoms of regular human influenza that happens every year. Those include: Fever, Sore Throat, and Cough. In addition, fatigue, lack of appetite, runny nose, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.have been reported.

What can we do to avoid getting sick? Infection occurs when the virus gets into the airways and lungs. However, it isn’t known how easily the virus spreads. As with any infectious disease that is spread through the human respiratory system, health officials recommend the following precautions: Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze- throw the tissue in the trash after you use it; Wash your hands with soap and water frequently- especially after you cough or sneeze; (Alcohol based hand cleaners are also effective); Try to avoid contact with sick people; If you get sick, stay home and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them; Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.  There are several websites where additional information can be found: Centers for Disease Control (www.cdc.gov) or 1-800-CDC-INFO, World Health Organization, Arizona Dept Of Health Services (www.azdhs.gov/flu/h1n1/index.htm)

We will continue to be in regular contact with the Yavapai County Health Department and to comply with any requests regarding precautionary sanitation procedures and/or other guidelines as they are issued.

Sedona Oak Creek Schools staff will be working with students to make sure that students are frequently washing their hands and that the surfaces that students are in contact with are frequently cleaned.

Please remind your child about the importance of washing their hands, covering their mouth when coughing or sneezing, and letting adults know if they do not feel well. Early detection is always important.

We are under the direction of the Yavapai County Health Department in enacting plans that were put in place a few years ago in dealing with pandemic disease situations. We will continue to keep you updated.

Call your health care provider if your child gets sick and showing signs of flu-like symptoms. Inform the school of your child’s illness. IF YOUR CHILD DEVELOPS FLU-LIKE SYMPTOMS, DO KEEP THEM HOME.  THEY NEED TO BE SYMPTOM FREE AND FEVER FREE 24 HRS BEFORE RETURNING TO SCHOOL.

The health and wellbeing of students is a priority.
Let’s work together to make this a healthy school year.

Sincerely,
Goldie Wolin R.N.

Pat Pfeifer
Certified Employee of the Month, May 2009

Pat Pfeifer has been teaching for over 40 years.  She has spent over 30 years teaching at West Sedona School.  She has taught whole families of kids and parents in Sedona. Two teachers at West Sedona were in Ms. Pfeifer’s class in fifth grade. Pat is fresh, exciting and innovative each and every day.  Her kids know where they stand, and they want to achieve.  She is the one of the most caring teachers that I know, and one of the most organized and focused on learning.  She walks her talk. Pat is surgical in finding out what works best for each of her students, and is a true partner with parents. Our school librarian asked her kids to write about Ms. Pfeifer, here is a composite.  “Ms. Pfeifer is an outstanding woman, I learn a lot from her, she is funny and reads us interesting books.  When I become a teacher I want to be just like her.”

Right now Pat is a finalist in the teacher of the year for the County.  She has nearly perfect attendance and believes she comes to school, not work! She knows each of her students well and cares about them deeply.  Ms. Pfeifer never misses her duty, and volunteers for extra duty because she is a strong believer in supervision.  This year the Brain Gym grant coordinator told me that Ms. Pfeifer kicks butt with her impeccable record keeping of all the kids and their pedometers.  She believes in health and nutrition and has spoken with all of her kids about how to stay healthy.

Pat also never misses an opportunity to give me insight and input and let me know that I am doing a good job!  I rely on her support and think of her as a model staff member.  - written by Dr. Lisa Hirsch, Principal West Sedona School

Marsha Beckwith
Classified Employee of the Month, May 2009

Marsha Beckwith is in her 11th year as West Sedona school’s secretary.  The kids love her so much they dedicated the yearbook to her last year! Marsha is best known for keeping everyone organized and on their toes.  She is early to work and late to go home.  I look at Marsha as my right hand woman.  I feel very fortunate to have a secretary who has all of the kids interest at heart.  She is also generous.  It is not uncommon for her to go out and buy a couple of hams at Christmas time and give them to families who she feels needs them.  She is also the major leader of our social committee.  She brings joy to the teachers and staff through decorative and decadent holiday lunches, usually loaded with chocolate desserts. She is always doing things to boost morale and to model team work.

Marsha has been key in our construction projects giving sensible input and being aware of safety of the students young and old.  Marsha belongs to the PTSA and she does not even have kids in the school.  she spent the year going to all of the meetings and participating in efforts to fund raise for West Sedona.  She rides a Harley and there is no messing with Marsha!  - written by Dr. Lisa Hirsch, Principal West Sedona School

Goin’ Buggy

Wednesday, May 13th at 6:30 p.m.

West Sedona School Multipurpose Room

Presented by the Second Grade Class

Directed by Mrs. Spokes & Mrs. Zaun

Goin’ Buggy is a charming, whimsical, musical revue about our country’s largest constituency – the insect population! They air their grievances, point with pride at their accomplishments and demand rights that are long overdue.  If you are alumni of the Goin’ Buggy Musical, we would love to have you attend and be recognized.  The students are very excited to perform in front of a live audience so come on out and have a “Buggy” of a time!
