Sedona Red Rock High Scorpion Booster Club, the Rotary Club of Sedona Red Rocks, and Rotary Club of Sedona are partnering to raise funds for our third “Casino Royale” fund raiser, starring Las Vegas comedienne Rita Rudner, which is set for April 3, 2010 at Enchantment Resort in Sedona, Arizona. In addition to an exciting gaming evening of blackjack, craps, poker and roulette, a fabulous auction will be held that will include fine wine, jewelry, exquisite art, vacations, and much more.

We would like you to support this fund-raising event by donating an item for our huge silent auction, which will benefit both the students of Red Rock High and the benefactors of the Rotary of Sedona Red Rocks and Rotary Club of Sedona.

Sedona Red Rock High School is launching an exciting Technological Program. The funds raised will go directly towards the latest hands on computer technology for students as well as programs
such as Teen Health and Wellness.

Funds raised by Rotary of Sedona Red Rocks are donated to several charities each year, including Burns and Trauma, a camp for severely burned and injured children, the Sedona Literacy Program at West Sedona School, Rotary Youth Leadership, local branches of the Boys and Girls Club, Old Town Mission projects, play equipment for the new Verde Valley Medical Center Pediatrics Unit, as well as many international capital improvement programs.

The Rotary Club of Sedona funds will sponsor the Student of the Month Scholarship Program at Sedona Red Rock High School, the International Exchange Student Program, the Rotary Youth Leadership, the St. Andrew’s Church community dinners and the Polio Plus Program.

SRRHS Desktop Publishing-Yearbook student, Hailey Cushenberry, sophomore, was one of eight Verde Valley students honored at the first annual “Why I Love Books” Essay Contest for Students.

The Well Red Coyote sponsored the contest, and over 120 entries were submitted. Two winners for each of the following categories: Grades K-3, Grades 4-5, Grades 6-8, and Grades 9-12, were chosen to receive a $75 cash award and a certificate for their outstanding work at the Sedona Book Festival at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3.

Essays were judged on creativity, passion, expression and language skills. Below is a copy of the winning piece posted on the bookstore’s online site.

Hailey Cushenberry (SRRHS 10th Grade):
Reading has always been a big part of my life, ever since I was a small child. Books dominate my everyday lifestyle to help keep me occupied and imaginative. I think I must have started reading earlier than some people, around first or second grade I had progressed to chapter books. Looking back, I am very glad that I advanced so fast. I think the major reason that I read well and as much as I do is the product of my wonderful father. My dad read to me ever since I could understand words. It was a routine we had and as I got better and could read more and more, the difficulty was increased. It started with him just reading out loud to me. Later, he would pause on a word and make me say it, like a fill in the blank. Soon after, I was reading to him. I think the greatest gift my dad gave me was the ability to read. Such skills have gotten me certificates and recognition from my peers and teachers. Reading enables the imagination and lets you enter unthought of worlds. My free time is filled with stacks of books in a musty library or my own personal bookshelf. The best part of books is discovering new books and rereading old classics. I will always love books, of all kinds, anytime.

OCTOBER 2, 2009 – SRRHS School Portrait Retake Day – ONE DAY ONLY

Lifetouch will be here for photo retakes for any student or staff member that misses the first scheduled August 27 and 28 shoots or those that are not satisfied with their portraits. We have scheduled retakes for ONE DAY ONLY in the teachers’ lounge.

The photographers will bring both the senior camera and backdrops and the underclass camera and backdrops on this day.

OCTOBER 2, 2009

If any underclass student is unhappy with their purchased packet, they MUST bring the portrait packet with them on this Monday and give it to the photographer to avoid additional charges. Order packets for the Oct. 2 shoot will be distributed during Block 2 on Monday, Sept. 21, and are available in the front office. No student is required to purchase a packet to appear in the yearbook or to receive an ID card.

Seniors are not required to bring money to purchase portraits on Oct. 2. They will receive a proof packet and order form the third week of October and can purchase their portrait choices at that time.

All students MUST get their photos taken by Lifetouch for the yearbook and final issue of The Sting newspaper. We do not accept any outside portraits for this publication and issue. However, seniors may submit other photographer’s work for their graduation program in the spring.

In a partnership with the City of Sedona, 110 Sedona Red Rock High School students from Marc Sterling’s business class and Mal Cooper’s photography class got a lesson in community involvement as they helped out some Sedona residents in a time of need.  For two afternoons, students volunteered their time to help clean up mud and debris in and around houses devastated by the recent flash flood on Little Elf Drive.
