SRRHS Fundraiser for “Heal The Heart”

By socusd

After studying about the use of women as “weapons of war”, the Advanced Placement English classes, National Honor Society, Key Club, and various other groups, are spearheading a fund-raiser for the vulnerable women of the world, called Heal the Heart.

In the Congo alone, over 300,000 women and girls have reported heinous abuse by militiamen.  The “women” ranged in age from 11 months to 82 years old.  We have decided that we can take a stand and do something to raise awareness and to raise money to help these victims seek medical care and relocation aid, to name a few.

From 5:30-7:30 on April 25, 2009 at the high school, we will host a gala event with music, dancing, a silent auction, pottery bowls, and performances in order to raise money for the women of the world and our own local women at the Verde Valley Sanctuary.

We hope you will consider aiding us in our efforts however you can.  We are looking for donations for the silent auction, food and drinks for the event and attendance at the event!

"My body is partly mended but I don't know if my heart will ever heal..." Zamuda Sikujuwa (MSNBC, 3/16/09).

Our tentative program includes:

  • African drumming
  • Poetry Out Loud
  • African dancers
  • Steel drums
  • Monologues about women survivors
  • Choir
  • Silent Auction
  • Pottery bowls (made by our Special Ed kids) to be filled with hot soup for sale
  • T-shirt sales
  • Luminaria and an “adoption” of a vulnerable woman
  • Student art and photographs

Please, especially in these rocky times, reach to help those who need it most.  Thank you for your consideration and time-it takes more than a village-it takes you!
